3 Irresistible High-Value Training Treats to Make Your Pup Go All-In for You!
Make your own high-value treats that’ll have your pup ready to learn anything!
If you’re looking for something that’ll grab your pooch’s attention faster than a tennis ball, you’re in the right place. What is a high value treat, you might ask? It's a treat us pooches will do almost anything for. They are small (you don’t want them to fill up on them!), moist and chewy (not large and crunchy like most treats), and they are extra smelly. The delightfully stinky smell is what will motivate your little fluffball during training sessions to give whatever you want them to learn a red-hot go.
Here I give you three super easy and ridiculously tasty treat recipes that’ll guarantee your furball’s undivided attention. Just a warning: these treats are so irresistible, they might even make the cat jealous (not that they’d ever admit it).
We dogs know what’s good and these treats are the absolute best, so let’s get cooking!
High-value treats are small, chewy and extra smelly, to get - and keep (!) - your pup’s attention
Fishy Fantasies
Ingredients
1 can of sardines in water (drained)
1 cup oat flour (whole wheat flour is fine too if that’s all you have)
1 egg
1/4 cup water (as needed)
Instructions
Preheat the Oven: Get that oven warming to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
Mix It Up: In a bowl, mash up the sardines with a fork until they’re nicely shredded. Add the flour and egg, and stir until a dough forms. Add water a little at a time until you’ve got a sticky but manageable texture.
Shape the Treats: Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into small squares.
Bake: Place on the baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Cool Completely: Let the treats cool. I know, I know, the smell is heavenly, but patience, my friends – they’ll be worth it!
Liver Lovin’ Bites
Ingredients
1/2 pound chicken liver
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup water (adjust for consistency)
Instructions
Preheat & Prep: Set your oven to 325°F (160°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Blend the Liver: Pop the chicken liver in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth (fair warning, it’s smelly – but of course that’s what makes them so great!).
Mix the Dough: In a bowl, mix the liver purée with the flour, adding water as needed to get a thick dough.
Roll & Cut: Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thick. Use your favourite cookie cutter or slice into squares.
Bake: Bake for about 25 minutes, until the treats are firm and dry.
Cool Completely: Let them cool down before serving. Remember, the extra aroma is what makes them high-value!
Cheesy Chicken Chunks
Ingredients:
1 cup cooked chicken (shredded)
1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese
1 egg
1/2 cup oat flour
Instructions:
Preheat: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Combine Ingredients: In a bowl, mix the shredded chicken, cheddar cheese, and egg. Add the oat flour, stirring until you have a nice, sticky dough.
Shape and Cut: Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thick. Use a cookie cutter (or just cut into bite-sized pieces).
Bake: Place on the baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes, or until golden and slightly crispy.
Cool and Serve: Let these treats cool completely – then watch your dog perform their best tricks for a taste of cheesy, chicken goodness.
Storage
Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks (the meat treats don’t keep there for longer than a week), or in the freezer for up to 3 months. But let’s be real, they won’t last that long.
Pro tip: For an extra smelly bonus, reheat a few in the microwave – it’ll take treat time to a whole new level!
Cut the dough into small squares because less is more.
All of these are perfect for training, spoiling, or just showing a little extra love. So, roll up those sleeves, ignore the funny looks from the cat, and get ready to see your dog’s loyalty go through the roof.
One more Pro Tip: Try out various high-value treats and keep the one your pup likes the best for special occasions only, when you REALLY need your pup to pay attention.
Happy baking!
