Grooming 101: An Easy Routine for a Healthy & Happy Pup!

Regular grooming helps maintain our coats, reduces shedding, and promotes healthy skin.

A regular grooming routine is not only quick & easy to do but it can also do wonders for our overall wellbeing. A fresh, clean coat, trimmed nails, and a nice ear rub? Pure bliss! Plus, with the right tricks, grooming can feel less like a chore and more like quality bonding time.

I still remember my very first bath. Without warning I was lifted into a tub, and the next thing I knew, water and soap were everywhere. I can assure you, “We were not amused!”. But, I’ll admit, the post-bath snuggles and fresh feeling were worth it. And now that I’m older, I’ve come to love grooming days – so let me help you turn grooming into a treat, not a task you’d both rather avoid!

Digging Deeper: DIY Grooming Tips for the Perfect Pup Look

1. Brushing Like a Pro

Depending on our coat type, regular brushing helps keep us looking spiffy and reduces shedding all over your couch (you’re welcome). For short-haired dogs, a weekly brush is often enough; for those of us with longer hair, daily brushing is best to prevent mats. Use a slicker brush for tangles or a de-shedding tool if you’re tired of finding fur tumbleweeds everywhere. For thick fur or dense double coats you might want to check out the Furminator.

2. Bathing: The Right Way

Baths aren’t every dog’s favourite, but with a gentle dog shampoo, we’ll feel fresh without irritating our skin. Aim for a bath every 4–6 weeks (unless we roll in something smelly, which, let’s face it, is always a possibility). Make sure to rinse thoroughly – soap residue is a no-no for our coats. And let’s be real, we may not love the process, but we do love that fresh feeling after a good bath.

Pro Tip: Keep treats nearby. A tasty distraction makes the bath fly by. And if the cat gives you a smug “I can clean myself” look, just ignore them – they have no idea what they’re missing!

Some of us like a bath more than others but we all love that fresh clean feeling after!

3. Nail Trimming: Short and Sweet

Overgrown nails are uncomfortable for us and can lead to paw problems. Aim to trim nails every 3–4 weeks. Use a dog-friendly nail clipper, and don’t clip too close to the quick (that sensitive bit in the middle). If trimming seems tricky, ask your vet or groomer for tips or check out a “dremel” tool, which files down nails gently.

Regular nail care prevents pain, injury, and potential damage to your home

4. Ear Care: Prevention is Key

Regular ear checks prevent infections. Use a dog-safe ear cleaner and cotton ball to gently wipe away any wax. Be cautious not to go too deep – just clean what’s visible. If you notice a bad smell or redness, it’s a sign to visit the vet. Ear infections are no fun, but with a little TLC, they’re easy to prevent.

Cat Comparison: Cats may flick their ears around like they’ve got radar, but a good ear cleaning keeps us dogs in top shape. No radar needed, just the occasional pampering.

5. Dental Care: Keep That Smile Bright

Brushing our teeth regularly (yes, teeth brushing!) keeps us from developing dental issues and that dreaded doggy breath. Use a dog toothbrush and toothpaste – and yes, we even have tasty flavours just for us, like peanut butter and chicken! Daily brushing is ideal, but a few times a week helps a lot. Plus, it’ll keep us ready for all those close-up snuggles.

Just like you, dogs need regular dental care to keep our smiles bright and healthy

Making Grooming Fun: Tips for Positive Reinforcement

  1. Treats, Treats, Treats – A little reward goes a long way in making grooming a positive experience.

  2. Keep it Calm – Start slow, speak softly, and avoid sudden movements. Grooming should be a peaceful bonding time, not a wrestling match.

  3. Be Consistent – Regular grooming sessions help us get used to the process, and soon enough, we’ll be looking forward to our “spa day”.

With a little patience, some tasty treats, and the right tools, grooming can be a delightful part of your dog’s routine – and a great bonding experience. So, next time you see the cat smugly licking their paw and acting all self-sufficient, just remember: we dogs know what true pampering feels like, and there’s nothing quite like a human to bring out our best look!
